Along the lowland canals, to discover how Bologna’s waters reach the sea

A 65-kilometre circular route that crosses the north-eastern part of the Bologna plain, following the dense network of canals, pumping stations and wetlands that characterise one of the most fascinating reclaimed landscapes in Emilia-Romagna. The route alternates between quiet country lanes, embankments and small rural villages, illustrating the millennia-old relationship between man and water and offering numerous opportunities to observe natural environments of great beauty. Thanks to the convenient starting point at San Pietro in Casale railway station, the route is perfect for those wishing to travel by train and bike and explore the water-rich heart of the plain.

Leaving the station and passing through the town centre of San Pietro in Casale, you turn onto Via Sant’Alberto. After a few kilometres, you come to the Canale della Botte, the largest artificial drainage channel in the Bologna plain. The route follows its embankment as far as San Venanzio di Galliera, offering an interesting view of one of the area’s main artificial waterways. You reach the centre of Galliera, a village of ancient origins that retains a strong link with the major agricultural and hydraulic transformations of the plain. From here, following the banks of the Canale della Botte once more, you reach Malalbergo. Along the route, you come across the Church of Santa Maria di Boschi di Baricella, a historic religious building nestled in the countryside and a focal point for the rural communities in the area. The route then continues through an area characterised by wetlands, canals and environments of great natural value, until it reaches the Gandazzolo area, one of the most important hydraulic hubs in the Bologna plain. Here, numerous canals and water regulation structures converge, alongside the large Gandazzolo flood control reservoir, which is essential for flood mitigation and the hydraulic safety of the area.

You cycle towards San Pietro Capofiume, following the Lorgana Low-Water Collector Canal, the very backbone of the drainage system for the lower plain. Continuing along the route, you eventually reach the La Rizza Oasis, one of the most significant nature and wetland areas in the Bologna plain, an ideal refuge for birdlife and the perfect spot for a break surrounded by nature. Finally, cycling along Via Rubizzano, you return to San Pietro in Casale railway station, thus completing the circular route and your exploration of the area’s hydraulic and environmental heritage.
