“Ciclovia del Navile” (Navile cycle path) is a route suitable for all cycle tourists in the flat lands of Bologna. It is a cycle path of about 35 kilometres along the Navile canal, the ancient waterway that connected the city of Bologna with the surrounding countryside.
The trail goes through the Vinci gates (important hydraulic artefacts) and plunges into the boundless fields typical of the plains landscape dotted with ancient historic villas and protected natural oases.
Unpaved stretches along the embankments alternate with small links on secondary roads.
At some points the utmost attention is required where the trail crosses short sections of road; in particular there is a dangerous crossing at Provincial Road 20 (SP20).
During the ride, you will traverse the “La Rizza” Oasis and the “Casone del Partigiano” park. A visit to the “Museo della Civiltà Contadina” (Museum of Rural Civilisation) inside the majestic Villa Smeraldi and the “Museo del Patrimonio Industriale” (Museum of Industrial Heritage) is not to be missed.
Period: The cycle route can be travelled all year round. The best times are most definitely the spring, with its blossoms and mild climate, and the early autumn period.
The summer season, particularly during July and August, is not recommended due to the high temperatures, just as winter is not recommended due to the risk of snow, rain and fog.
