Information

In the heart of the Bolognese Apennines, the Memory Cycle Path (Ciclovia della Memoria, part of Emilia-Romagna’s Ciclovie dei Parchi network) offers a deeply moving cycling experience. This itinerary combines panoramic views over the ridgelines of the Reno and Setta valleys with the historical significance of the Monte Sole Historical Park, a symbolic location of the Resistance and a place to honor the victims of the 1944 massacre. Thanks to the local railway network, the route is ideal for a day-long train+bike excursion starting and ending in Bologna.

Upon arriving at the Lama di Reno station, the route immediately begins with a notable cultural stop: the Romanesque Pieve di Panico, one of the architectural gems of the mid-Reno Valley. Past the church, the climb begins toward San Silvestro along the ridgeline separating the Reno and Setta river valleys—the main backbone of the entire ride. After clearing the initial clayey sections (be mindful of mud during rainy seasons), the landscape shifts to reveal the sandstone formations typical of Monte Sole. The trail bypasses the mountain summit to lead through the sites deeply marked by the massacre of autumn 1944. The Cerpiano Oratory and the cemetery with the church of Casaglia are key landmarks: preserved in their consolidated ruins, these buildings stand as silent witnesses to the tragedy and embody the Memorial Park’s message of peace.

Beyond its historical value, the route provides outstanding natural scenery: from broadleaf forests to cliffside clusters of holm oak and Scots pine, alongside opportunities to spot local wildlife (ungulates and wolves). For a break and refreshments, you can stop at the “Il Poggiolo” Park Visitor Center. From there, the final descent leads through Sperticano down to the Pian di Venola railway station, the ideal spot to catch the train back to Bologna.
