Information

A cycling route of around 30 kilometres, entirely flat and easy, which crosses the Bologna Flatland, exploring the natural surroundings of the river and the woods. The route passes through two villages but runs mainly through the countryside and along picturesque waterways and cycle paths, such as the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo and the Ciclovia del Reno.

The route starts at Poggio Renatico railway station, which is easily reached by train on the Bologna-Ferrara line. From here, after a short ride through the countryside, you enter a stretch nestled within the Bosco della Panfilia, one of the most picturesque natural environments in the Emilian plain. The route winds along paths in the shade of the woods, offering a first direct encounter with the river landscape and the biodiversity associated with the River Reno. Once out of the woods, you can see the confluence of the river and the Cavo Napoleonico. From here, you set off again to meet the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, along which you’ll find the Crevenzosa Plant, a strategic infrastructure for water distribution and a tangible example of the complex hydraulic management system of the plain.

In the shadow of the Galliera tower, follow the course of the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo along a dirt track to reach the centre of San Pietro in Casale via country lanes, and catch the train back to your accommodation.

The cycle route is accessible all year round. The best times to visit are definitely the spring months, when you can enjoy the blossoms and mild climate, and early autumn.
During the summer season, particularly in July and August, it is not recommended due to the high temperatures, and winter is also not recommended due to the risk of snow, rain and fog.
