The Planet Trail

A cosmic journey through science and nature in the Bolognese Apennines

The Planets Trail is a fascinating themed hike of about seven kilometres, nestled among the rolling hills of the Bolognese Apennines. Created by the Associazione Astrofili Bolognesi-APS (Bologna Amateur Astronomers Association) as a detour from the historic Piccola Cassia trail, this educational route dedicated to the Solar System is a real gem for hikers of all ages, combining the beauty of nature with the wonders of science.

The trail starts from the picturesque vantage point of Croce delle Pradole and ends at the Felsina Astronomical Observatory in the municipality of Monte San Pietro. The route, on a scale of one to one billion, is not linear but follows CAI trails numbered 209, 138, 142 and 146a. Along the route, information panels dedicated to each planet in our Solar System have been installed. Each stage comes with images and interesting facts, transforming every step into an opportunity for learning and wonder, until reaching the Astronomical Observatory, symbolic of the Sun.

It can be divided into two sections: the first, easier section leads to the planet Neptune (in the centre of Montepastore); the second, much more challenging section, leads from Neptune to the Sun (Felsina Astronomical Observatory).

The route is designed to be flexible and adaptable to different needs:

• First section (easy and accessible) from the Kuiper Belt to Neptune: This segment is ideal for families with young children and people with reduced mobility. Very simple and slightly downhill, it follows cart tracks and minor roads, offering a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The route ends in Montepastore, where you can take a refreshing break and find places to eat. This section is perfect for a “cosmic” introduction without excessive effort.
• Second section (more challenging) from Neptune to the Sun: From Montepastore, the trail continues with more hiking characteristics towards the ‘Felsina’ Astronomical Observatory. The first part of this section has an elevation gain of about 200 metres, requiring a minimum of physical effort. The reward? Breathtaking views and the thrill of reaching the final ‘star’ of your journey: the Observatory.
