A 50-kilometer cycling loop in the heart of the Bolognese plain: discover the beauty of the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, the charm of Pieve di Cento, and the hydraulic architecture that shaped the land. Explore the “Bassa” with an itinerary that blends nature, art, and human ingenuity. Starting from San Pietro in Casale, this circular route will lead you to hidden treasures, through tree-lined avenues, scenic cycle paths along the Reno River, and art-filled villages with timeless charm.

This itinerary is entirely flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels. The route alternates between paved sections, white gravel roads, and river embankments, offering a varied and evocative riding experience. The elevation gain is practically zero, allowing you to fully enjoy the agricultural landscape and the historic architecture of the Bologna province.

The journey begins at the San Pietro in Casale railway station, a strategic hub easily accessible via Train+Bike services. After the first few kilometers, you will dive into the central theme of the loop: water management. You will encounter the CER (Canale Emiliano Romagnolo) lifting plant in Pieve di Cento, a majestic engineering work essential for irrigation and life in the Emilian plain.

Pedaling toward Mascarino, you can admire an unexpected architectural jewel: the Church of Santa Maria in Venezzano. With its Neo-Gothic forms, it represents a stylistic exception of great beauty within the rural landscape. Continuing toward Castello d’Argile, the path winds through cultivated fields to the Oratory of Sant’Anna, a devotional chapel of extraordinary elegance, perfectly preserved and immersed in the silence of the countryside.

Once in Pieve di Cento, treat yourself to an extended break. This medieval village is a true cultural pearl: you can visit the Pinacoteca to admire the works of Guercino, explore the historic Lutherie School, or stroll under the porticos of the historic center, which rival the capital, Bologna, in elegance.

After the break, the second part of the itinerary is dedicated to nature. Following the Reno River Cycle Path, you will ride along the riverbank, enjoying wide panoramic views. Here, you will find the Reno Spillway and the “La Bisana” Ecological Rebalancing Area, a biodiversity oasis perfect for birdwatching and regenerating in the greenery. The final stretch skirts the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo once again, leading you comfortably back to San Pietro in Casale station for your return.
