As many as three parks in the area are considered to be of value on a global scale. In fact, the Chalks of Emilia-Romagna have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the phenomenon ‘Karst and caves in the evaporites of the northern Apennines‘. The hill and mountain areas are specifically the Parco della Vena del Gesso Romagnola, the Gessi Bolognesi and the Gessi di Zola Predosa.
